Joy to the World!
During the angel’s visit with Mary, he tells her that her cousin Elizabeth has also conceived a son, in her old age. Mary can barely contain her joy! Imagine just how excited young Mary must have been.
She’s been visited by an angel of the Lord, who has told her she is highly favored with God, and will become pregnant with the promised Savior of the world. Now, he has told her that her elderly cousin, who has been barren, is six months pregnant!
After the angel left, Mary quickly prepares to visit Elizabeth who lived in the hill country of Judah. Upon her arrival, when Elizabeth hears the sound of Mary’s voice, her baby (John) leaps for joy inside her womb and she is filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth shouts out, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my LORD should come to me?” Luke 1:42-43 Mary had not yet even had the chance to tell her cousin what had happened to her, yet by the power of the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth perceived it.
The child Elizabeth was carrying, would become known as “John the Baptist.” John is also known as the “Forunner” who would prepare the people for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. John was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb, just as the angel had told Zachariah he would be. “For he will be great in the sight of the LORD. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.” Luke 1:15
God is Great in All of His ways! Nothing is to hard for Him! He is the Divine, Everlasting, Omniscient Holy God! Everything He does is orderly, organized, and perfect. “As for God, His way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.” 2 Samuel 22:31
Through the stories we read in the Bible, we see how God set the perfect stage for the coming of our Savior. When we study God’s word, we begin to have an understanding of how amazing God truly is. He has provided everything for us, and most importantly He has provided salvation for ALL those who will humble themselves and repent. God has given each one of us free will, and never forces Himself upon us. Instead, He bends down to us and invites us to come to Him. This Christmas, will you come to Him?
