Advent: No Room for God

And she brought forth her first born Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn (kataluma).” Luke 2:7

As Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem, the rooms had all been taken. Back then, people would usually have stayed with their family when visiting. The word translated “inn” (kataluma) is not traditionally what we would think of as a hotel, but rather a “guest room.” Since Mary was traveling and was nine months pregnant, it probably took them a little longer than most to reach their destination. So that once they arrived, all of the guest rooms were already occupied, and the best that could be given was room where the animals were kept.

Jesus was born in the middle of the night and no one knew the Savior of the world had come. Mary wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger. It was quiet and calm. The animals had all witnessed the most humble birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus!

God came down to us, because we need to have our sin covered and washed away, in order to spend eternity with Him in heaven. He was born of a virgin. He lived a sinless life, and died a gruesome death on the cross. On the third day, He rose from the grave defeating death and sin. Because of His great Love for us He gave Himself willingly to be a sacrifice. Yet, today most ignore the sacrifice God made for us. People make jokes about Jesus and blaspheme His name. They make no room for Him in their lives, and ignore that He ever came at all. God provides for all of our needs, and He has provided salvation to all who will humble themselves and come to Him.

Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas. Will you make room for Him this year?
